November 21, 2021 - Strange to wander in the fog!

In the high areas of the Black Forest, the sun was already shining early in the morning, while dense high fog covered cities and landscapes of the Rhine plain with a continuous gray.

This typical inversion weather situation has prevailed for days, when warm, dry air in higher air layers flows over a cold, heavy layer of air close to the ground.

To escape the dreary November blues, we decided to go on a hike to the highest mountain in the northern Black Forest. The Hornisgrinde (1164.4 m above sea level) rises above the Black Forest High Road B500 between Unterstmatt and Seibelseckle.

In November, because of its lower altitude, the sun no longer has as much power (radiation energy) as in summer and is not able to "heat away" the fog.

So at the beginning of the ascent we hung in the damp, cold fog, sometimes lighter, sometimes denser.

Until finally the competition between sun and fog became more and more visible and tangible. Not only romantically inclined people can derive an aesthetic charm from this natural spectacle.

In addition, one could constantly observe a fascinating spectacle in the adjacent forest when the scattering of incident sunlight occurred on small suspended particles.

After about 45 minutes we were already at the summit above the seemingly endless sea of fog. Incidentally, there is the SWR station Hornisgrinde, a basic network station of the Südwestrundfunk for radio.

A circular hike to the Mummelsee can also be undertaken from up there. On the way you can enjoy many wonderful views.
