September 3, 2022 - Late summer in northern Italy

In the first week of September in South Tyrol there were still pleasant temperatures and varied weather, perfect conditions for photography and hiking. The first photo spot is less than 30 minutes by car from Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Passo Giau. Arrived there an hour before sunrise, a gigantic all-round view revealed itself over countless mountain ranges with very prominent peaks and of course the unmistakable Ra Gusela peak.

The following evening I went again to the summit of this high mountain pass at 2236 m.

The weather gods were kind to me and so I was able to photograph some interesting lighting moods and some drama in the clouds.

The demanding hike to Lake Sorapis is one of the most beautiful tours in the Dolomites. The lake is well known for its intense shades of blue, aquamarine and turquoise. The starting point is the Tre Croci Pass, from where you follow trail 215.

You hike on a varied panoramic path that first leads through a beautiful forest and later offers a view of the Cristallo and Popena mountains, the Cadini group and the Three Peaks.

The latter attraction, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the famous symbol of the Dolomites, should of course not be missing as a destination.

Even though my partner used a completely different climbing technique to climb the photo spot above the Lavaredo hut, we both made it in time before sunset.

Lago Federa at the foot of the Croda da Lago is one of the most idyllic lakes in the Dolomites.

This hike begins at the small Pezie de Paru car park, located directly on the Passo-Giau pass road. A lake path leads around the small mountain lake, which always opens up new perspectives on its shimmering water and the rock walls reflected in it. Lago Federa is only fed by underground springs and has a particularly high water quality.

Although you are still in the middle of the Alps, the way to the Adriatic Sea is not far.

The day before our departure we decided to go to Venice.

Strolling through the picturesque streets and the enchanting bridges across the lagoon city, watching the hustle and bustle on the Grand Canal, taking photos with the pigeons on St. Mark's Square or a walk across the world-famous Rialto Bridge - these experiences are not easily forgotten.

A walk through the streets of Venice in the evening is also very atmospheric.

So we didn't start the way back until it got dark and could now experience this enchanting city from a completely different side...
