The Matterhorn – Because it rises 4,478 m into the sky and appears so autonomous, it attracts attention, intentionally or unintentionally. Rarely can someone resist pulling out their camera or at least their smartphone and taking a snap. Last but not least, it owes its fame to the countless images that go around the world. I spent 4 days in the Zermatt region to photograph this natural wonder in the Valais Alps from a variety of perspectives.
The famous mountaineering village of Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn shortly after sunset
But where are the perfect photo spots? The best spots are definitely on the Sunnegga/Rothorn side, from where the beautiful shape of the Matterhorn comes into its own. But there are also good photo points in the village of Zermatt and for those who are comfortable on foot, the many hiking trails and mountain huts offer further attractive locations with wonderful views of the "Horu" (Valais German).
Here is a small selection of my personal favorites, purely subjective and without any claim to completeness.
A popular viewing point in the village is the church bridge

A popular viewing point in the village is the church bridge. This spot is particularly recommended at sunrise and sunset, but you can also take attractive photos there during the day and at blue hour. The river Mattervispa, which leads to the Matterhorn, creates a harmonious picture structure.
Zermatt Matterhorn viewpoint
Probably the best view of the town, including the famous Matterhorn, is from the advertised viewing point in the northeast. The steep steps up are definitely worth it as the breathtaking view at sunset can take your breath away. The illuminated Zermatt with the Matterhorn directly behind it also looks spectacular.
You shouldn't necessarily show up at this spot at the last minute, especially if you want to take photos with a tripod, as it is quite busy at some peak times.
Matterhorn reflection on Lake Stellisee
The most attractive Matterhorn reflection can be found at Stellisee. The east side of the Matterhorn is beautifully illuminated by the first rays of sun.
Even without the reflection of the lake, some scenery appears photogenic
But depending on the month, the sunset is also worthwhile, when the sun disappears right next to the Matterhorn and, with a bit of luck, the afterglow appears.
In summer you are allowed to camp wild at the lake, but I decided to spend two nights in the Fluhalp mountain inn at an altitude of 2620 m. You can spend the night there inexpensively with the best views from June to October. A reservation is required, if you're lucky you might even get a room with a view of the Matterhorn.
Personally, I can highly recommend the Fluhalp. The staff is very courteous and friendly, the rooms, toilets and washrooms are very clean.
In addition, as an overnight guest you will be served a tasty 4-course meal in the evening, which is included in the price.
Lake Stellisee is just a few minutes' walk away, so I was there early in the morning and evening.

The quickest way to Fluhalp is on foot via the Blauherd cable car station (via Sunnegga). The journey from Zermatt to Blauherd takes about 20 minutes. After another 30 minutes on the wide and well-marked hiking trail you reach the mountain inn. The first train leaves Zermatt at 8:00 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. in the low season.
Matterhorn reflection at Grindjisee
The small and pretty Grindjisee offers the perfect Matterhorn foreground.
It can be reached via a short hike from Stellisee. We also recommend a tent or the Fluhalp mountain inn as accommodation options.
This spot is particularly recommended in autumn, when the golden-yellow larches glow in the warm light.
I have wanted to see and photograph the Matterhorn for many years. A unique feeling when this wish finally came true in September 2024.
The “Horu” struck me as a majestic, calm figure. Deeply impressed and grateful, I always look at these shots with great pleasure!
