This is one of Germany's natural wonders and the symbol of Saarland: the Saar Loop in the tri-border region of Germany, Luxembourg, and France.

Here, the Saar River forms Germany's most beautiful river bend in the landscape. The view from the opposite Cloef viewpoint, at a height of approximately 180 meters, is particularly impressive.

The name "Cloef" probably originates from Celtic and means something like "cliff".

A visit to the Cloef viewpoint in the early morning is an impressive experience, especially when, during a breathtaking sunrise, wisps of fog drift through the Saar Valley and the first rays of sunlight illuminate the landscape. Even though the fog was absent this morning, the platform offered unique panoramic views across the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, the Saar Loop, and as far as France. Perfectly framed by the green hills of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, this river wonder has captivated not only Frederick William IV, King of Prussia, but also the French poet Victor Hugo.

At the top of the promontory, encircled here by the Saar River, the partially restored ruins of Montclair Castle can be seen on the opposite side.

First documented in 1168, the castle, around which many legends and stories have grown, was one of the most imposing castles in Germany and was considered impregnable.

In the Middle Ages, it was one of the most important fortifications on the lower Saar and served to control the river as a vital transport artery.

The Saar Loop near the Cloef viewpoint offers a dense network of hiking trails, including highlights such as the Cloefpfad Dream Loop (8.2 km) and the challenging Saar Loop Table Tour (16 km). The trails lead through rocky landscapes and wooded areas, often offering panoramic views of the Saarland's iconic landmark.

Hikers enjoy spectacular views from the Cloef viewpoint and the treetop walkway, a 1,250-meter-long path with a 42-meter-high observation tower offering sweeping vistas across the Saar Loop.

The observation tower is accessible without steps, allowing everyone to enjoy the unique panoramic view of the Saar Loop and the surrounding landscape of the nature park.

You can learn where the loop gets its distinctive shape and how it came to be at one of the numerous learning and play stations scattered along the winding path through the treetops.

A wobbly bridge and a slide provide a little adrenaline rush.

While there is an entrance fee for the treetop walkway, the view from the Cloef viewpoint is free. Benches invite you to linger, and various hiking trails of different lengths lead to other viewpoints that offer yet another perspective of the Saar Loop!
