A sleigh, two runners and a 14 kilometer long natural toboggan run: in the Wildkogel Arena Neukirchen & Bramberg in the Salzburger Land in Austria, everyone who wants to whiz down the mountain on a toboggan during their winter holiday is in good hands. Helmet, glasses, gloves and sturdy shoes - and you're ready to go. Hardly any other winter sport is so uncomplicated and so much fun to do together, both during the day and at night. The world's longest illuminated toboggan run runs from Wildkogel down to Bramberg.
The Smaragdbahn in Bramberg, newly built in 2011, lives up to its name: it transforms the unusually long toboggan run into the jewel of the Alps.
It takes you up to the Wildkogel, a 2,224 meter high mountain and part of the Kitzbühel Alps, at almost 2,100 m above sea level, from where the ultimate tobogganing fun begins.
Once at the top, you have to gather all your courage, get the toboggan ready and race down the 14 km long, adventurous toboggan run to Bramberg either in bright sunshine or under floodlights. Within about 30 - 50 minutes you cover an incredible 1300 meters in altitude in serpentines into the valley.
If you take the Wildkogelbahn from Neukirchen to the ski area, you can also reach the longest illuminated toboggan run in Bramberg in just about 10 minutes on foot.
The operating times of the toboggan run depend on the snow and weather conditions.
The ascent is possible until 4:15 p.m., on Fridays extended operating hours until 6:30 p.m. However, the toboggan run is closed to all operations after 10 p.m.
In order to further increase the tobogganing fun and ensure the best conditions, extensive preparation work is carried out every Monday from 6 p.m.
You not only have a sensational view of the main Alpine ridge, the Hohe Tauern National Park and the unique view of the Pinzgau, but also an exceptionally long toboggan run.
The track is rolled nice and wide, so that even if you drive slowly, you won't be an obstacle.
There are numerous places to stop for refreshments along the toboggan run: right at the start is the Wildkogel Alm, followed by the Wildkogelhaus, about halfway there is the "Zwischenzeit" (in keeping with the name) and there are also several places to stop for refreshments in the valley.
The entire toboggan run on the Wildkogel is illuminated from the mountain to the valley station and marks the destination like a lighthouse.
